'The Doom Of The Hollow' Readers Reviews

5.0 out of 5 stars A sterling follow-up in the series.

Again, a really strong novel from Pete Worrall. I enjoyed his first novel, They Grow Upon The Eyes, and was eagerly anticipating this - I wasn't to be disappointed.

His characterisation and plot are eminently believable and the book skips along at just the right pace to keep you enthralled.

If you are looking for a book to make the hairs stand up on the back of your neck this is it....a completely new genre.

Pete excels in turning the utter banality of everyday life 90 degrees into a truly disturbing and unnerving form of reality - he is John Wyndham for the new millennium.

Roll on the next instalment!

5.0 out of 5 stars Fantastic follow up from "They Grow Upon The Eyes"

I really enjoyed this second book in the series, Plenty of drama and suspense and some very unexpected twists of fate!!!! I cannot wait for the final book to be completed.

5.0 out of 5 stars You'll never walk into your garage again....

This book is the sequel to 'They grow upon the eyes' by the same author. I would actually say this isn't a sequel or even a prequel as Pete uses the clever device of having the events in the first half of the book set at the same time as book one but, from some new and some familiar characters point of view. Then the second half is where the two books meet up and we go on from there. Perhaps this book is more of an 'equal'!! Readers who have not read the first book may be a little lost on some of the plot twists so I would advise reading that one first so to get the most out of this one. However it's not essential.

With it's -the more you look the more you see- stunning front cover (same comment for the first book too) I felt this was going to be an exciting read. Whereas 'They grow upon the eyes' was a scary action thriller, I would say this is more spooky tension with mystery and action thriller. And that is one of the best things about this book. The building of tension by using the readers imagination with locations that they can relate too is not always easy to do. But Pete has done something right when I'm not sure about walking into my junk store of a garage again!!

We learn a lot more about the -whatever they are- creatures, or do we? The more we find out the less we know. Their origins there purpose? Lots of hints and lots of questions. The authors writing style has matured a lot since the first book and we now have more personal character development, better descriptive passages and an easy to read flowing narrative. I found some wonderful descriptive lines and the chapter where one character re-visits 'The Eyes' was a standout 'squeaky bum' moment. Another is a chapter near the end that was difficult to read due to its close to the bone subject matter, but I feel Pete Worrall should be applauded for putting this in. Giving any details will give too much away but when you read it you too will say to yourself 'No, no, no no no no, don't do it...don't do it'.

As in the first book, all locations can be found around the country and even visited yourself although I'm not sure I'll be visiting '...their lair...' anytime soon. Difficult to say much without giving too much away but with the first lines of 'The figure's talon like fingers were buried in the victims face' it certainly makes you want to read on, as long as you're not the squeamish sort.

Of course there are some minor faults as there are in every novel, for example Cigar smoking Detective Cannon leaps around like a fit 30 year old at times when she's at an age when all that should be behind you. But when you're in a crisis situation it's amazing what people can achieve.

Overall I was so impressed by this sequel novel (and the original one too) and it deserves a wider audience. I'm not giving away too much by saying that it suggests a third part? Perhaps?
