May 2016 Writing Update

It’s been a while since I released anything, I apologise for that, but here’s what’s in the cooking pot. I’m working on 3 shorter stories at the moment, similar to ‘Goet’ and ‘Thank You For The Music’ both in length and style. The next planned full length, ‘The Mechanical Systole Hypothesis’, is still on the back burner at the moment.

The first of these stories is: ‘The Shimmer At Fog Cottage’

A drunken student receives a phone call in the middle of the night from a woman he doesn’t know. She is frightened and pleads for his help. “I know it’s coming, it has come for everyone else, how does it know where we are?” she says before the line is cut off. The only clue as to her whereabouts is, ‘Fog Cottage’.

The second is: ‘Thank You For The Music: The Brazen Suite’

A direct sequel to ‘Thank You For The Music’, ‘The Brazen Suite’ finds Lisa O’Hara waking up on the dew soaked grass outside Middleton Manor with no recollection of how she got there. Back in 1925, Charles Middleton is ready to record the next part of his greatest master piece, ‘The Brazen Suite’. He just needs 6 minutes, and Miss McCready with her disappointing cakes is unwittingly helping him as it’ has brought another ‘volunteer’ to his house.

The third is: ‘The Canal’

It is 1982, the summer in England has been warm and dry. The water levels in the disused North Walsham and Dilham Canal are low, revealing the top of the tipped rubbish resting in the silt. One upturned shopping cart is a dead woman’s cage. She is naked, unknown to the local populace and without an identity. In 1989 the body is still unidentified and the case considered a ‘dead end’. It is given to a recently transferred Inspector after an internal enquiry, in an effort to keep her out of the media spotlight.

I do not have an estimated time of release for these as of yet but, hopefully, it will be sooner rather than later, but I just wanted to let everyone know what I was working on and what will be coming. They will initially be available on kindle. I know not everyone has a kindle, so the plan is to put all of the short stories into one paperback volume. Thank you for your continued patience.

In the meantime, here is an audio extract from ‘The Unforeseen Children of Olive Shipley’. It is read by Rosemary Alldred and sound fx are by Martin Worrall. Isabelle Cannon has just arrived at Manchester Airport and notices something on the other side of the security barrier. It is one of my favourite moments.

But STOP PRESS!!

As a teaser for what’s to come, there will be an EXCLUSIVE audio extract from ‘The Brazen Suite’ released on Easter Day. It is read once again by the brilliant Kate Walsh with sound fx by Martin Worrall. It is from Chapter 1 and is of Charles musing about Miss McCready. Prepare to be creeped out! Screenplay:

The screenplay for ‘Thank You For The Music’ is also coming together, however, even as the author of the original, the difference of prose vs film is very apparent. It is very difficult to transfer a book directly into a screenplay and make it work. But work continues on it as I think it’ll be great once I’ve finished.

The Next Full Length: ‘The Mechanical Systole Hypothesis’

Although on the back burner, I have done a lot of planning for this and made a start. I think the story is strong but it needs to be as watertight as possible, even for the allowing of artistic license. These things take time, unfortunately. Anyhoo, I can tell you it starts with a man having a heart attack in a dentist chair while the dental assistant looks on and plays with her phone….nice.
